Labile diabetes melitus - course and form

Type 1
2nd type

Labile diabetes melitusLabile diabetes mellitus is the most severe form of diabetes. It is characterized by difficulty in selection of insulin preparations dose in case of presence of this disease, unmotivated sharp fluctuations in blood glucose throughout the day, often without apparent cause disruptions in hypoglycemia. Diabetic hypoglycemic coma, vascular and nervous system disorders and even disability and death of the patient are achieved faster in case of presence of labile diabetes mellitus than in other forms of this disease (diabetes mellitus).

Lability of diabetes mellitus occurs in about 10% of patients. Most of them are young people under the age of 20 years, but there are many documented cases of appearance of labile diabetes and in the elderly.

Many doctors often say about this disease that it is not a problem of the pathophysiology, but it is problem of psychology. Even the diabetics deny the existence in nature of "labile" diabetes, but only speak about some kind of "labile" patients and doctors. Literally obsession of latest to achieve stability of glucose in the blood of the patient, as a consequence - the ill-conceived and inappropriate treatments only serve to exacerbate the disease. Conversely, competent approach to the treatment of patients suddenly leads them to certain kind of new "discovery" that diabetes is not a sentence ...

Often labile form of diabetes is actually a phenomenon described in 1939 by Michael Somogyi. Its essence is very similar to a series of plane crashes that occurred with the introduction of automatic control airplanes. Their reason is bad reaction of pilots to the actions of automatic systems and their tries to normalize flight. And here: when receiving a signal of a low level of blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, the body reacts in a natural way. The thing is that this reaction is treated properly!

Letís take a closer look at the scheme of the labile forms of diabetes mellitus. First of all body receives a high dose of insulin. Level of blood sugar is decreased. When it drops below the "alarm limit", liver refers to its stores of glycogen. Glucose is released in the blood. Sugar level is restored.

Now imagine that hypoglycemia occurred at night (usually the way it happens). You sleep and therefore you donít feel its symptoms. They occur only in the morning in the form of nausea and headaches. Level of sugar contained in blood when itís cheeked is high, because liver has already done its job!

So how the doctor responds to these symptoms? He increases dose of insulin! Similarly, like the pilots that didnít trust automation, trying to fend off its actions. As a result, the aircraft lose its control and then it was inevitably followed by the catastrophe.

In order to ensure that the labile diabetes is actually nothing more than a Somogyi phenomenon you have to watch the level of sugar in your blood - every four hours during the week, not just during the day. Now, with the diary in hand you can visit the doctor. That is the method how to pick up the correct dose of insulin for your body. Good luck.
