Diabetes mellitus in animalsIn case an animal suffers from diabetes (a cat or dog) the disorders of protein, carbohydrate, fat and water-salt metabolism happen to it. If the interaction between insulin, which is hormone of pancreatic gland, and organism’s cells is broken, then cells are cut from the important source of energy. As result glucose is accumulated in big quantities in blood and the hyperglycemia happens as result of this process. Excessive amount of glucose is washed away with urine and then as a result, dehydration leads to constant thirst (dipsesis). The energy hunger of cells calls for fat mobilization and triggers the increase of fatty acids level in blood and loss of weight.

Diabetes is met in one animal per 500. The peak of the disease is around the age of 7 years, and intact bitches suffer most of all.

Causes of animal diabetes are not clear, but the following ones are met most of all:

Inheritance is also important in manifestation of diabetes’ causes and symptoms as well as the phase of genesial cycle.

Diabetes mellitus may be of two types. First (1st) type of this disease is called insulin-dependent, it happens to young animals. It features the decrease of efficiency or complete stop of producing of own insulin. There is only one method of treatment: lifetime injections of insulin. Second (2nd) type of diabetes mellitus that is also known as insulin-independent diabetes is pertained to the animals of average age. Insulin secretion is kept partly or changed. This kind of diabetes may be reversible.

Symptoms of uncomplicated animal diabetes:

At the latter stages, the refusal of foot, vomiting, drowsing, apathy or acetone odor may appear. One of the symptoms that prove the progress of life threatening condition is ketoacidosis.

The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus is defined against the picture of clinical symptoms, urinal glucose and the high level of glucose in the fasted animal’s state. The minimum pack of analyses in this case consists of: blood and urine analyses. To get a more precise diagnosis and find out causes of appearance of the disease some extra analyses may be needed.
