Cold and its treatment in diabetes mellitusThe diabetic cold, even very common one, may cause a row of complications to a patient. Weakened by presence of disease organism starts secreting hormones, targeted on beating of the disease, and, thus organism stops absorb insulin properly and as result it leads to hyperglycosemia.

Hyperglycosemia, found in addition to viral diseases, should be reported to a doctor and controlled because, if patient will let it go on its own, he may face very dangerous consequences, for example diabetic coma and ketoacidosis.

Control of blood sugar level

In case of cold, patient should check amount of ketone bodies in urine every 3-4 hours and undertake something to normalize level of sugar in blood.

If there is diarrhea and vomiting presented as symptoms, patient has to protect oneself from dehydration by drinking enough quantity of water. This helps to avoid abrupt jumps of sugar level. In case, on the contrary, if sugar is low, it is necessary to replace the water with apple juice or any liquid that contains glucose in its composition.

Diabetes and high temperature

Treatment of cold in diabetes mellitusViral and bacterial diseases leads in most cases to increase of body temperature. Fighting against disease organism may have some shortage of insulin, if the dose is below normal level, therefore there must be additional injections in the lower abdomen.

In this case preparations for those small injections should be of short or ultra-short effect. Frequency of additional injections must be within every 3-4 hours.

In this case dosage of insulin is one fourth of the individual dose plus one individual dose depending on the body temperature and level of blood sugar.

Diet of patient in case of presence of the disease

In the course of cold, it is necessary to drink about 250 ml of liquids every hour; this helps to avoid dehydration.

In case if sugar level is above 13 mole/l the drink should not be sweet: mineral water, green tea without sugar and broth for example.

Patient should eat every 3-4 hours. The foods rich in kalium and sodium should prevail.

As example can be used draft diet of the patient: glass of juice (30 gr of carbohydrates), glass of meat or vegetable broth, glass of mineral water.

In case of improvement other foods may be added.
